The competition runs from 1 to 5 October in the Artscape Theatre and, the final round on the 5th is at 19.30.

Twenty three gifted musicians between the ages of 15 and 19 years have been selected at auditions to compete in the categories for piano, strings, wind instruments and other orchestral instruments.
Artscape CEO, Michael Maas states that this is one of the top three music competitions in South Africa, and the only one where the finalists compete against each other, accompanied by the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO). It is a prestigious annual event that offers cash prizes totalling more than R110 000, as well as gold, silver and bronze medals. Category winners and their runners-up also gain free entry to a UNISA grade examination in 2014.

Maas says, “We are thrilled to have a royal flush with a percussionist and a harpist joining the challenge. Last year's contest rendered an exciting unexpected result when, Kensuke Kawajiri (14) and Sulayman Human (19), both pianists, shared the laurels after receiving perfect, matching scores from eight adjudicators.”

This national competition caters for emerging musicians who are below the age limit for the UNISA International Music Competition and the ATKV Muziq competition. Having players in all four categories confirms our belief that there is a lot of undiscovered young talent out there”.

Each contestant takes part in the first two rounds, after which a maximum of twelve competitors go through to the third round. Thereafter, six finalists are chosen to perform with the CPO at a gala concert under the baton of British maestro, Tim Murray.

During the first two rounds, each competitor must play four works from at least three different style periods. One of the works must be a movement from a classical or romantic sonata. A later style period is allowed for brass instruments and saxophone.

Third round, contestants play a 20-minute recital of contrasting works, as well as a movement from a concerto; or a single work for the chosen instrument; or two movements from a concerto; or a complete concerto with piano accompaniment.

The adjudicators for 2013 include prominent academics and musicians from across South Africa whose expertise covers most of instruments represented in the competition. They are Ella Fourie (Piano), John Hinch (Flute), Franklin Larey (Piano), Marion Lewin (Cello), Michael Maas (CEO of Artscape), Suzanne Martens (Violin), Kutlwano Masote (Violin), Brandon Phillips (Bassoon) and Polina Burdukova (Cello).

In collaboration with UNISA, Artscape last year introduced a shadow jury consisting of former contestants to train them to becoming future music adjudicators. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive," says Maas.

The shadow jury this year are Matthew Ferrandi (Clarinet) Sang Woo Jun (Violin), Myles Roberts (Flute), Lieva Starker (Violin), Louise Theart (Flute) and the 2011 overall winner Eben Wagenstroom (Piano). They will be advised by Arisa Voges and Sean Adams from UNISA.

All the rounds are open to the public. Entrance is free for the first three rounds and performed in the Artscape Theatre.
Shepherd has released three critically acclaimed South African Music Award-nominated albums, namely ‘fineART’, ‘A Portrait of Home’ and ‘South African History !X’. His debut solo piano album, recorded in Japan, will be launched in the East- Asian country during October 2013.

“… this is no antiseptic chopsfest: it is music of genuine passion, meditative and stately but always emotionally engaged. It has groove at its very core, with hummable, stripped back melodies on top – and not just in the “head” sections that traditionally top and tail jazz arrangements.” Marcus O’Dair | The Arts Desk UK

“This is improvisation as a search for freedom, “freedom from”, yes, but also “freedom to”, a key to unlock the doors of music making in the future”. Miles Keylock | Editor-in-Chief, Rolling Stone Magazine, South Africa

“Shepherd, a Cape Town native who will turn 26 this summer, plays piano with old-soul authority and composes rich, evocative music. He’s very much grounded in the myriad and compelling sounds of his homeland, but there’s a personal stamp on his art and an awareness of jazz beyond South Africa to it too. The latter adds dimension but never overtakes the music’s beautiful and powerful sense of rootedness.” Peter Hum | Jazzblog.ca Canada

Who would ever think that an award-winning young South African jazz bassist, with impressive collaborations in Europe and the USA, and past scholarship opportunities that helped grow his music, would divulge some inner personal turmoil in his first CD album, appropriately entitled “Oscillations”? Shane Lee Cooper, born in 1985, is the 2013 Standard Bank Young Artist for jazz. This CD contains another five young Capetownians (also award winners) who, collectively, have produced varied soundscapes conveying uncertainties and vacillations about the future, possibly influenced by the wibble-wabbles of the past. Perhaps the album’s producer, the eclectic pedal effects electronic bassist, Carlo Mombelli, has something to do with that.

Shane’s original songs are filled with melodic-cum-discordant phrases, at times with hopeful cadences and resolutions; at other times with intentional imbalance and reluctance. The songs are visual: I see a rubber ducky bobbing about in the bath tub as waves of water undulate erratically. I see a fascination with change, that the contemporary world isn’t steady at all, that we are all vacillating, teetering, confronted with antagonisms, both positive and negative. The album is perfectly titled: we are all oscillating through life!

Along with his 40-year old Czech upright bass, Shane has chosen a strong team of jazz musicians with whom he has worked on other collaborations, such as the Indian-fusion jazz group, BABU. Shane’s visual medium through sound was honed in the Darkroom Collective which sets improvised music to projected slideshows. “Oscillations” contains the energy of drummer, Kesivan Naidoo; the strong voice of pianist Bokani Dyer; the melodic and bebop styles of tenor saxman, Buddy Wells, and alto saxman, Justin Bellairs; and the flare and enigma of guitarist, Reza Khota.

One hears emotion and uncertainty of purpose, sees the heart wandering, out of focus, watches a little bird free in a big sky, feels the spirituality of First People and of oneself. Special effects include a lilting marovany (a box of strings indigenous to Madagascar) with cowbells, or the plucking of piano strings covered with pillows.

All musicians have their influences: Bokani’s piano solo in ‘Destination’ influenced by US Jazz pianist, Robert Glasper. Justin’s alto in “Drop Down” follows sounds of the UK’s jazz sax/rapper, Soweto Kinch. Shane read a Japanese novelist’s “Dead Letters”, which conveys lost letters from loved ones with his upright bass solo holding together a beautiful ending. Producer Carlo Mombelli had an obvious say in “Shadowplay” through Reza’s electric guitar resonances. Kesivan’s drums emulate bebop styles of Wayne Shorter in “Ohriah”. Unlike the emotional confusions conveyed in this CD, the musicians simply know what they’re doing.

A Pendulum swing is predictable and steady. “Oscillations” isn’t. It’s true to life. As Carlo commented: “It’s a CD with one sound, like going to an art gallery to see one exhibit.” This CD is a ride. Watch your rubber ducky.

Album release is scheduled for 22 August 2013 at Cape Town’s Mahogany Room . Shane performs at the upcoming August Standard Bank Joy of Jazz in Johannesburg.Gregory Franzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17072027593185502293noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28840016.post-63120908871502716432013-06-30T23:48:00.003+02:002013-06-30T23:48:28.813+02:00INTERNATIONAL GUITAR NIGHT - WINTER SERIES 2013INTERNATIONAL GUITAR NIGHT - WINTER SERIES 2013

Circling the globe annually, performing in the finest venues and acoustic guitar-based events, Gomm and Reed are luminaries in the acoustic guitar world, each having garnered a massive following.

Jon Gomm, based in Leeds is an acoustic singer-songwriter with a revolutionary virtuoso guitar style. He uses the acoustic guitar to create drum sounds, basslines and twisting melodies all at the same time. His live shows combine deeply personal performances, has a natural wit and a once-seen-never-forgotten two-handed guitar style, that produces sounds people can barely believe are coming from a humble acoustic guitar.
Preston Reed is a one-man revolution. The 58 year-old New Yorker tweaks the nose of musical convention, pokes the eye of accepted wisdom, and burns the rulebook of the past. His unique style is impossible, unfathomable, unthinkable, as with blurred hands he taps, tickles, slaps and soothes his instrument, fusing polyrhythmic percussion with emotive melody to create a sonic landscape. It is said that ‘your brain fizzes as it computes the musical madness being relayed by your ears’.
From speed dating to one night stands and proposing to a gay man, the one thing that Esgueira can teach you is that there's no such thing as too much wine before a first date! Portraying a host of desperate characters well past their sell-by-dates Esgueira stops at nothing to find love, including seeking the help of sangomas, psychics and joining a polygamous cult in India.
The Goema Orchestra is a musical umbrella which is `goema' more in ethos than in sound, honing in on the movement of people and sounds and stories that created goema. The orchestra is debuting five new orchestral works by Cape Town based composers this weekend.

This is probably Mac's finest moment to date: five new orchestral works by five composers in Cape Town. That is a huge undertaking. Not only has Mac been composing his own new work, but he has been mentoring others and nurturing an orchestra to perform them.

"There's nothing like it!" says Reza Khota, Cape Town guitarist and composer, of the Orchestra and the event itself. "All these new works on one night, I don't know if it has been done anywhere."

Keenan Ahrends is the youngest of the composers, and at age 25 perhaps best exemplifies the purpose of the Composers' Workshop and the Goema Orchestra itself. Without the intervention of the Workshop, Keenan wouldn't have an opportunity to work with an orchestra. As Valmont Layne, former chief of the District Six Museum, and a Cape Town based cultural producer says: "The Workshop is important for a city that increasingly seeks to value creativity and innovation for social development. Here is a living thriving example in its musical life that points to its rich traditions, but also to its restless contemporary nature."

In addition to the young composers featured is Sathima Benjamin, one of the greatest legends of Cape Town music, both as a performer of international repute and a music entrepreneur. Cape Town pianist and arranger George Werner has arranged one of her early 80 compositions called 'Music' for the Goema Orchestra. George says "If it wasn't for Sathima the world wouldn't have known about Abdullah Ibrahim, and if it wasn't for Abdullah, the world probaby wouldn't have known about our jazz and especially about goema! Sathima is a portal. And she's also far less recognised here than she should be. We have a lot to be thankful to her for, and it's fitting that the Goema Orchestra can feature this great icon together with the next generation".
Led by Cape Town’s ‘goema captain’ Mac McKenzie, the orchestra will perform the première of The South Atlantic Suite, McKenzie’s third major orchestral work.

“The Suite evokes dormant musical thoughts and practises deeply embedded in the memories of peoples from along the south western coast of Africa and eastern coast of South America, people who share a common ancestry and experiences born out of slavery”, says McKenzie.

“The 20-piece Cape Town Goema Orchestra is a synergy of diverse musicians and people, from highly experienced classical, jazz and traditional music instrumentalists, to young church and street musicians, all connected to the rich culture and soundscape of our city. It’s a truly unifying force in our country that celebrates and takes our music forward with vision and passion”.

McKenzie’s NPO, the Cape Town Composer’s Workshop, showcases budding composers and is the driving force behind the Goema Orchestra. The season will include new works by orchestra members Chantal Willie, Anna Strugar, Derek Gripper and Mandla Mlangeni.

A new composition by bassist Chantal Willie explores nuances of jazz, world music and South African music. Strugar, a young Serbian arranger studying at UCT, creates work influenced by jazz, folk and classical music. Cape guitarist Derek Gripper has gained renown as a composer of original music in a variety of folk and classical styles, while some of Mlangeni’s compositions and performances on jazz trumpet can also be heard in groups like TRC.

The orchestra’s line-up will also feature leading string players Rayelle Goodman and Jürgen Schwietering, woodwinds specialist Mike Rossi and jazz pianist Andre Petersen.

In April this year Mac McKenzie was invited to Switzerland to perform his music with Swiss and South African musicians in an especially lined-up Friendship orchestra. He was granted a further commission to develop more music in the goema genre.

Concert performances start at 8 pm. Tickets cost R100. Students and seniors pay R70. There are discounts on bookings of 10 or more. For reservations call 072 500 2204 or email: composers.workshop.ct@gmail.com
The first South African Artists for Aids Awareness concert, partnered with the New Apostolic Symphony Orchestra and Choir was held on February 22, 2009 at Silvertown Auditorium with the theme “Here’s to the Heroes”. It celebrated unsung individuals in our communities who were doing exceptional work in the HIV/AIDS field.
The three day ‘minifest’ of music will offer a range of voices and explore pieces from the jazz genre to contemporary African flavour.
The opening night offers a feast for lovers of South African Jazz, with a big band experience directed by Silent Revolution Music, who also ran last year’s acclaimed “Winter Jazz Series”. The line-up includes featured principals such as Errol Dyers, Khaya Mahlangu, Zolani Mahola (Freshlyground) and the legendary Morris Goldberg (whose participation is facilitated by Standard Bank Jazz Festival, Grahamstown) with narrative by actor David Isaacs.

On Friday 6th, audiences will groove to Closet Snare, complete with a 12 piece string section and special guest stars Inge Beckmann, Bokani Dyer and EJ von Lyrik, before Joe Nina and MXO take the stage.

The Contemporary African Music Session wraps up the hat-trick on Saturday 7th, with a programme that includes guitar icon Madala Kunene and a rare Cape Town performance from Caiphus Semenya.

A photographic exhibition called "Not Just Divas" (courtesy of MOSHITO – The South African Music Conference) will be on display in the space. The exhibition includes 30 photographs of women musicians from, or performing in, South Africa; a pertinent study ahead of August 9ths women’s day. Workshops for 45 music school (instrumental curriculum) students will be held over the three days. The daytime workshops will be mentored by several of the featured musicians.

Funded by the National Lottery Development Trust Fund (NLDTF), City Hall Sessions is a project of The Cape Town Partnership’s Creative Cape Town programme, and is aimed at bringing a diversity of world class music performance into the heart of the City.

Tickets prices range from R 40 to R 150, including substantial discounts for students, and are available from Computicket commencing Friday, 22 June. The March programme of City Hall Sessions sold out a week prior to the concert therefore bookings are essential.

The concert starts at 19h30 on Thursday and 20h00 on both Friday and Saturday evening, at the Cape Town City Hall.

2012 will see further City Hall Sessions in September.

IGN’s main focus is on those players who use their right-hand fingers to individually pluck the strings creating bass, rhythm, melody and percussive lines all at the same time, like a mini-orchestra coaxed out by the fingers of the right hand. It makes for mesmerising and exhilarating music.
Michael Fix is a multi-award winning guitarist and composer who has evolved as one of Australia’s leading acoustic guitarists for more than two decades. His remarkable skills on the acoustic steel-string guitar have to be seen and heard to be believed. The man is warm, funny and engaging on-stage - a deadly combination – and has his audience wrapped around one of his highly skilled fingers from the first few notes of any performance.

I recently arrived in Nieu Bethesda for an extended sabbatical. I was traveling from Cape Town and with each passing kilometer the angst and stresses of urban living were gradually shed and replaced with the anticipation of settling into a new space and the excitement of starting work on my debut novel.
Between the N9 and my destination I pass through Rubidge Kloof and at the apex as the road bends I look down to my left into a lush valley where the farm De Toren lies nestled in the embrace of the surrounding mountains and an spontaneous smile spreads from my face into my soul.

I arrive on a mild autumn morning and even though it is a Friday, the streets are virtually deserted except for a couple of dogs who accompany me to The Karoo Lamb Restaurant where I meet my hosts Ian and Katrin Allemann who are also the owners of Spooky and Gump – who incidentally is appearing in court on Youth Day. They have been settled here in this sleepy little Groot Karoo dorpie for close to thirteen years. We sit on the spacious veranda of The Karoo Lamb – with a menu that includes regular specials of lamb, oxtail or venison potjie in addition to the usual fried Karoo Lamb chops, sandwiches and soups; situated diagonally across from the now famous Owl House – sipping coffee and getting to know each other before I am shown to the Aardvark’s Burrow, a spacious flatlet behind the old church hall where I will be staying for the next six months.

After a steaming shower I walk down the untarred roads of the village, lined with ancient pear trees, willows and variations of cypresses and pines that whisper a welcome as I wander contentedly with the constant accompaniment of rushing water in the Lei Water or water furrows that were built in the 1870’s and in the distance a deeper, more ominous roar of the Gats River which flows strongly after the recent rains.

The locals smile openly and greet with a willingness to stop for a welcoming chat; young men on their way to the local general dealer pass by on horseback with a wave, listening to the tinny music playing on their cell phones; and always in the background, rising majestically above everything else is the snow-capped Compasberg.

That evening at Die RamStal – literally an old ram stable that has been converted into the new pub – there is a bring-and-braai with a few of the local young and old farmers, mingling with some of the resident artists and craftsmen. Naturally everyone is curious about who I am and why I am here and while some approach me and chat, others just eye me surreptitiously until they are a bit more inebriated. Soon the smell of meat on an open fire fills the air and pots of stywepap and sous are added to the equation, making me salivate ravenously while trying my best to stay focused on the conversation I am having with a fellow writer who is also a co-owner of the local book store. The Karoo lamb chops with locally made wors is a carnivore’s dream and after eating my fill, the conversation continues for a while until eventually it is time to call it a night. As I leave the cozy pub I feel the chill breeze blowing down from the mountain and as soon as I leave the comforting glow of light, I stumble along in the pitch dark until I have to stop to regain my bearings and I happen to look up. The momentary panic – a remnant of the receding urban fear – is replaced by a lingering awe at the celestial splendor visible in all of its glory and as I continue on my way I smile once again with the sound of the rushing river and birdsong accompanying my footsteps: and a lone dog, barking in the distance.

The following morning I awake early and am accompanied on my walk by Spooky and Gump who gambol along playfully, oblivious of the frost covered ground. They take me on a guided tour of their favourite haunts over the footbridge and across the river, past the old mill and the Brewery, beyond the verdant fields and farms with doleful sheep watching the dogs warily and eventually back to the Karoo Lamb where the inviting aroma of freshly brewed coffee and frying bacon reminds me that I have to watch my weight here in the Groot Karoo. Just after nine I visit the Owl House and am completely mesmerized by the sad and lonely beauty of Helen Martin’s expression which was – as is so often the case with great artists – frowned upon in her lifetime but which has now become the lifeblood of this idyllic little Groot Karoo village which has successfully resisted the deceptive allure of what most would consider progress.

I need time to assimilate the experience and opt out of the fossil tour and the visit to the bookstore, choosing instead to sit quietly on my own along the river beneath the trees and ponder the enormity of such dedication. Besides I have time enough to visit all of the interesting places: the bushmen’s paintings at Ganora Guest farm owned by Jan-Peet and Hester Steynberg; the gallery at The Village Inn where they also have a sumptuous breakfast and lunch menu; the award winning sculptor Frans Boekkooi’s working studio; the Kitching Fossil Center where visitors are taken on a guided tour along the river; The Brewery and Two Goats Deli where Andre Cilliers brews a superior Sneeuberg beer and makes his own goat’s milk cheeses; and of course Dustcovers, co-owned by Victoria Nance who with her quirkish smile confesses that she is a seller of rare and collectible books and damn fine reads!

Nieu Bethesda has no Bank or ATM, no streetlights, only the one tarred road which ends four kilometers from town, and no petrol station; it has no neon lights and frills and certainly very little night life in the conventional sense of the word, but the one that it has in abundance is character and I for one feel blessed everyday that I awake in this pristine little corner of our beautiful country.

When Jozi residents were enjoying BURN THE FLOOR's sell-out season last year, the response from Cape Town residents was unprecedented, wanting thes how to tour, thus leading to the decision that the Broadway hit production will now open its 2012 South African tour in the Mother City with a 3-week season from July 11th to July 29th at the Artscape Opera House, before moving to Johannesburg and Durban.
Now there is even better news that a South African champion dancer, Keoikantse Motsepe, has since joined BURN THE FLOOR, ready to wow local audiences as a fully-fledged member of this international dance sensation for the very first time.

Dreams certainly do come true -according to undefeated South African Latin American Champion since 2004, Keoikantse Motsepe, also known as'Keo'.
Keo's dance teacher took him to see Burn The Floor last year. At first he was a bit resistant to see the show, but after a few seconds, it was one of the best dance shows he had ever seen. Says Keo,"I was blown away to be honest, I can't describe the feeling."

He managed to contact the Company Manager, Peta Roby, auditioned, and has been touring with the company since January 2012.

Keo started dancing at the age of five after his best friend suggested they try it out for some fun. At age seven, he knew that it was all he wanted to do for ther est of his life – he was hooked. Keo completed his formal dance training in Latin American, Ballroom and Contemporary at Corenergy Dance Centre, Craighall Park, Johannesburg, with Rafick Hoosain and Lorcia Cooper. He has represented South Africa internationally since 2003 in all major Latin Dance Championships, and was the South African representative at the World Latin Championships in New York 2010.
According to theshow's producers, "Keo is a breath of fresh air, polite, a real gentleman and very popular in the company, his family should be proud. His work ethic and commitment to hi sperformance is unquestionable and on the dance floor: simple – he owns it. The South African audiences are in for a real treat."

BURN THE FLOOR is the show that revolutionised the image of dance, which then launched the many reality dance shows, SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE, DANCING WITH THE STARS,SUPERSTARS OF DANCE, to name but a few, that audiences have grown to love.

The energetic production was originally designed as a special performance in 1997 at Sir Elton John’s 50th birthday celebration. At the height of the festivities, a group of sixteen young dancers brought the house down with a ten-minute dance cabaret. After seeing this performance, legendary Australian theatre producer Harley Medcalf had the spark of an idea to build a full stage show around what he had just seen.

From that first moment of inspiration, what would become the international sensation BURN THE FLOOR quickly evolved.

Since then, the show has toured in 30 countries and over 160 cities worldwide. The current company boasts performers from 10 countries with more than 100 Championship Dance titles between them. These include winners and finalists from SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE, DANCING WITH THE STARS and SUPERSTARS OF DANCE.

While the production has no spoken dialogue, it does tell a story, and it brings a whole new meaning to ballroom dancing. "This ain't your grandma's ballroom", says Harley Medcalf, the show’s creator. Ballroom dancing has been around for years, but BURN THE FLOOR,the theatrical ballroom dance show, is anything but old school. BURN THE FLOOR labels itself as "Ballroom Reinvented."

Filled from start to finish with spellbinding numbers in ballroom dance styles ranging from the Waltz, Cha-Cha, Samba, Salsa, Rumba, Foxtrot, Quickstep, Mambo, Tango, Swing,Jive, Lindy Hop, Viennese Waltz, and Paso Doble, BURN THE FLOORis "like ballroom dancing super charged. It’s the incredible art form of ballroom dance combined with rock and roll," adds Medcalf.

With the creativity of world-famous ballroom choreographer Jason Gilkison, BURN THE FLOOR takes ballroom to a whole new level. Gilkison’s unique choreography combines the classic ballroom styles with a modern flare.

Though BURN THE FLOOR is a show that dance enthusiasts will love, it's not just for the performance connoisseur. Unlike many dance performances, BURN THE FLOOR brings so many styles to the stage, it doesn’t matter who you are. You’re guaranteed to love it."Most people think if they're going to a ballroom show, they're going to see some waltzing around the stage and things like that," says Medcalf. "But they don’t know what they’regetting themselves into because this show just blows away all expectations."
BIG TIME! is a cross-cultural music exchange between five professional musicians from France and South Africa and eleven youth musicians from townships around Cape Town. The result is the BIG TIME! Orchestra, that will perform across Cape Town and nationally from June.

Star jazz man Marcus Wyatt will be BIG TIME!’s special guest. The project is anchored by the renowned youth jazz group the Little Giants directed by George Werner. They will collaborate with Braka’s Elephants Quartet from Paris to form the BIG TIME! Orchestra. The group will feature in three performances at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, where its ranks will be swelled by the inclusion of township youth musicians from the festival city. The mass orchestra will lead the closing procession of this year’s festival.

BIG TIME! forms part of the Seasons of exchange between South African and France signed by Presidents Zuma and Sarkozy in early 2011. French Season in South Africa is a series of multi-disciplinary collaborations and exchanges and will take place later this year. The reciprocal South African Season in France will take place next year(2013).
Kesivan Naidoo - Drums and cymbals,
Reza Khota - Guitar,
Shane Cooper- Bass,
Ronan Skillen - Tabla, Extended Percussion and Didgeridoo,
presented an experience of brilliance at the Mahogany Room, 79 Buitenkant Street, Cape Town on 23 May 2012 with music that range from Fela Kuti to John Coltrane and their own eclectic compositions.

On their website they introduce themselves like this:
"Babu fuses the complexity and vibrancy of jazz with the long-standing improvisational practices of Indian classical music. This fusion of two streams of musical expression taps into the more complex realms of human experience - the subconscious, perhaps mystical world - through the medium of four experienced, diverse, technically-impressive musicians. With great faith, love and a willing audience, the performance occasion can bring minds together to test the depth of ecstasy in music and leave the room charged with exhilaration, respect and love for all life."
A group with an eclectic mix of sound influences, the trio's music is strongly rooted in traditional musical styles from Africa, South Africa, the Middle and Far East. They bring this together within a jazz and improvised context.
"My aim with the trio is to establish freer forms and a greater emphasis on improvisation - which is to say that the trio is not as 'tune driven' as my quartet is. Brydon and Claude are highly intuitive musicians, so the freer, more pliable forms allow for each musician’s strengths and musical preferences to come to the fore." says Smith.
Smith, winner of the 2009 FMR / Pick 'n Pay Music Award in the Jazz category made a very favourable impression when he went on tour with the Kyle Shepherd 'fineART' Quartet in June 2010 to perform in Switzerland at The Bird's Eye Jazz Club and Denmark at the Aarhus and Riverboat Jazz Festivals. He is also (most notably) a member of The Kyle Shepherd Group.
Founded in 2007 by Director and Hout Bay resident, Ms Dwyn Griesel, KMA now provides musical opportunities to over 130 pupils, priding itself on successful cultural and racial integration, which is KMA’s underlying principle.

Over the last 5½ years, the Academy has grown exponentially on an annual basis and is now establishing itself as a sustainable and reputable music school in the Hout Bay valley, providing a much needed service to not only the disadvantaged communities but also the many families in Hout Bay who can afford music tuition for their children.

KMA has won many awards, including the Mixed Choirs Trophy at the 2011 Cape Town Eistedfodd, and the Hout Bay Lions Club Louis Volks Humanitarian Award. In November 2011 Dwyn received the 2011 Inyathelo Philanthropy in the Arts Award.

Besides 11 other ensembles on the go, KMA has established a successful partnership with James House Children’s Home in Hout Bay, by developing a marimba group of 12 young girls from Imizamu Yethu informal settlement, who have performed in and around Cape Town on a regular basis since 2010.

Says Dwyn, "To date we would not have been able to survive without the support of organisations and individuals locally and internationally, but in order for KMA to continue expanding and continue being a valuable contributor to South African society we constantly need increased sponsorship. We depend on the assistance and involvement of the community and welcome any contributions people out there are willing to make."

Already making waves in the jazz arena, some of these musicians have represented South Africa at local and international jazz festivals and events such as the prestigious Big Band Festival, the National Jazz Festival in Grahamstown and the Cape Town International Jazz Festival. They have also appeared on television and had interviews on radio.

Since its inception, the educational programme has changed each year to create exciting challenges for participants, developing possibilities, creativity and diversity. Last year the Delft Big Band conducted by Ian Smith accompanied six soloists. The band and soloists were also mentored by Ian. In previous years, youth bands received individual mentorship, with well-known jazz musicians in preparation for their performance at the festivals. Kevin Gibson and Wesley Rustin were amongst those mentors. Artscape provides the platform to showcase the work with all the technical support.
In 2003 Artscape Audience Development and Education included the Youth Jazz Festival as an extension of their annual Classical Youth Music Festival, which began in 1971 - to give young instrumental soloists and singers the opportunity of performing with a professional orchestra. The 2012 Youth Jazz Festival once again follows the same concept with soloists performing with highly skilled professional musicians who will also mentor the soloists.

This concert marks a decade of Artscape’s youth jazz development and education and is a project of the Audience Development and Education Department. Says Marlene le Roux, director of the department: ‘Not only does the Jazz project develop musical skills, it gives assurance to future audiences for this genre. There is a phenomenal jazz tradition in the Western Cape which will be kept alive through nurturing these young musicians. This project is building positive future citizens who recognise through hard work they can put their dreams into action.’
