Featuring Steve Newman, Greg Georgiades & Ashish Joshi

The Forge, Kalkbay, Cape Town

2, 3 & 4 April @ 8.30pm and 7pm on 5 April

Legendary acoustic guitarist Steve Newman of Tananas teams up with Greg Georgiades and Ashish Joshi to record a new album FUN WITH SPIRIT in front of live audience at The Forge, Kalk Bay on Thursday 2, Friday 3, Saturday 4 April at 8.30pm and Sunday 5 April at 7pm.

The trio will feature a range of acoustic instrumentation with Steve on Nylon Flamenco Guitar, Resonator Nylon Guitar, Contralto and Mbiratar (Nylon Resonator with attached hardwood Mbira). Greg plays Nylon Flamenco Guitar, Oud (North African fretless Lute), Bouzouki and Oudtar, with ‘Beatmaster’, Ashish on Tabla (Indian Classical Drums), Darbukah (Arabic Drum) Dhol and Zarb (Iranian Drum).

Their music is acoustically driven with catchy entrancing melodies, powerful beats and rhythms. The styles are rooted in Africa with rich Arabic tones from the north to ‘Goema’ sounds of the Cape. The show will feature solo performances by each musician as well as duets and trio combinations. They will be recording each night for an album to be released at The National Arts Festival in Grahamstown this year.

Steve Newman is well known across the length and breadth of Southern Africa and recognized internationally where he has toured as a member of the world renowned group 'Tananas' at major festivals including Peter Gabriel's WOMAD festival.

Collectively these musicians have played at every major festival in Southern Africa to rave reviews including Oppikoppi, Splashy Fen, Awesome Africa, The Morija Festival in Lesotho, Bank Windhoek Festival, Ai'Gams Festival in Namibia, Zanzibar International Film Festival, the Potchefstroom National Arts Festival, Oudsthoorn National Arts Festival, Cape Town International Jazz Festival and further afield for the Prince of Dubai in the Seychelles and the Orange Arts Festival in Reunion.

Concert Photography - PhotographyBB Online

There are many free online magazines. One that I look out for every month is PhotographyBB Online.

Taking photos at live music venues, one have to consider many factors when the light conditions are not ideal. You also have to be very careful that you do not step on the performers toes.

The February 2009 edition of PhotographyBB Online have a brilliant article on Concert Photography, written by Gareth Glynn Ash. The magazine is downloadable in pdf format. Past issues are also available and it is free. Give it a try.

"Jazz and freedom go hand in hand. That explains it. There isn't any more to add to it. If I do add to it, it gets complicated. That's something for you to think about. You think about it and dig it. You dig it..." Thelonious Monk
