The event:
TONES OF NOTE PRODUCTIONS PRESENTS RUS NERWICH AND THE COLLECTIVE IMAGINATION: ONCE-OFF CONCERT AT THE SABC AUDITORIUM SEA POINT, 18 June 2009

The musicians:The Collective Imagination featuring
Rus Nerwich on Saxophone
Lee Thomson – Trumpet
Ross McDonald – Trombone
Mark Fransman – Piano
Dave Ledbetter – Guitar
Wesley Rustin – Bass
Kevin Gibson – Drums
Ronan Skillen on Tabla and Percussion

All I have to say, guys, You Are World Class. I am so glad I was there. What a concert, bring on the next one...

The elders of jazz in South Africa, do not need to worry. The music are in good hands. These guys are really carrying the torch.

This is a comment from Carol Martin:

Rus Nerwich's "Mantras for Modern Man " concert at SABC Auditorium, Sea Point, on 18 June 2009 should have been a 'two-evening' showcase of his rich, moving, and applaudable compilations of Jewish concentration camp songs. This evening featured another dynamic of instruments - namely the electric guitar and tabla to give that Middle Eastern improvised sound - which were not heard on his equally moving studio-produced 'Beyond the Walls'. Rus has an uncanny method of mixing the sad, shocking, and cynical moods of such songs to reflect a hardship and a joy of surviving that the displaced Jews experienced. As a result, the evening was indeed 'heavy', and I could have split the sound experience into two (eves)..... Bravo for wonderful performances from the Tones-of-Note Man !!

Well done to The Collective...

Kyle Shepherd Solo Piano Concert - Saturday 27 June 2009

Kyle Shepherd, one of South Africa’s most accomplished jazz pianists, will be performing his original compositions in a Solo Piano Concert.

BOOKINGS essential - to book seats online, click here

Shepherd’s Debut Album 'fineART' which was released in January 2009 has been highly acclaimed by respected Jazz critics and discerning listeners alike.

"(his compositions) unashamedly display his cultural music traditions, drawing on the unique rhythms, harmonies, and melodic devices of what Kyle calls “music from home”. Carol Martin (SAJE - South African Association for Jazz Education).

"It’s this ‘Proudly South African’ tradition that audiences can expect to hear" ... "which sees the multi-instrumentalist navigate an impressionistic collage of South African jazz sounds, from slam poetic minimalist re-imaginings of Afrikaans volksliedjies and Muslim calls to prayer, to goema groove deconstructions, tributes to Abdullah Ibrahim, Ngqawana’s philosophy of “Zimology” and more that, as the doyen of South African jazz scribes Gwen Ansell pointed out in Business Day recently: “live in the jazz world but are never imprisoned by it”. Miles Keylock (Mail & Guardian)

“Shepherd’s jagged edges and questioning dissonances sound far more like Ibrahim at the start of his career than his magisterial solemnity. The young player’s plaintive little minor-key segues into fragments of musical fragments represent a sonic collage of his city, much as pianist Robert Glasper’s sounds (also heard this year in Cape Town) collage the jazz history and hip-hop present of New York. ” Gwen Ansell (Business Day / The Weekender)

RUS NERWICH AND THE COLLECTIVE IMAGINATION

TONES OF NOTE PRODUCTIONS PRESENTS RUS NERWICH AND THE COLLECTIVE IMAGINATION: ONCE-OFF CONCERT AT THE SABC AUDITORIUM SEA POINT

Rus Nerwich and Tones of Note Productions are proud to present a one-night only concert at the SABC Auditorium 209 Beach Road Seapoint, Cape Town. Nerwich and The Collective Imagination will be performing compositions from three previous album releases, namely Mantras for Modern Man and Beyond the Walls as well as newly composed works written specially for this occasion.

The Collective Imagination features an all-star line-up:
Rus Nerwich on Saxophone
Lee Thomson – Trumpet
Ross McDonald – Trombone
Mark Fransman – Piano
Dave Ledbetter – Guitar
Wesley Rustin – Bass
Kevin Gibson – Drums
Ronan Skillen on Tabla and Percussion

Nerwich’s Mantras for Modern Man and Beyond the Walls will be featured. Mantras is an eclectic fusion of world music, jazz, and Nerwich’s semitic traditional influences, coming together in an enigmatic sound, that is inspiring, transporting and esoteric in nature. The concert will also feature music from Nerwich’s critically acclaimed album, Beyond the Walls; a historical recording exploring music written in the ghettos of wartime Europe. The album was recognised as one of the most significant and original projects to have come out of the South African music landscape in recent years.

After the recent release of Under the Poetree, a fusion of Jazz, hip-hop and soul, which garnered Nerwich two SAMA award nominations, this performance repositions Nerwich as one of the most innovative and prolific musicians in the country, continuing to delve into the more serious and adventurous dimensions of his musical persona.

The concert takes place at 19h30 on June 18 at the SABC Auditorium, 209 Beach Road, Sea Point. A R50 ticket price is payable at the door. Specially commissioned Double CD packs of Mantras for Modern Man can be bought for R100 at the event. For pre-booked tickets, please contact:
