HAITI FUNDRAISING CONCERT, FRI 16/04/2010, ST GEORGE'S CATHEDRAL

an invitation from Trudy Rushin:

Hi

Like so many other people, when the news of the earthquake reverberated around the world on 12 January, I felt a strong need to DO something to help. I thought that St George's Cathedral would be the perfect venue for Capetonians to come together, to show support for people suffering on the other side of the world. I applied for the use of the Cathedral in January, but was only able to secure a date much later.

We all know that, even though Haiti is not in every news bulletin and on the front page of every newspaper, its people are experiencing immense hardship to this day, trying to recover from the devastation caused by the earthquake and subsequent aftershocks. Families are dealing with the loss of multiple members, children have been orphaned, entire neighbourhoods ruined. People lost their livelihoods and are dealing with trauma related to loss of limbs and many other physical difficulties. The effects of this earthquake were much more devastating because of the impoverished living conditions and inferior infrastructure in the affected areas.

I've rallied a group of musicians and poets, all eager to contribute their talents towards this worthy cause, and we'll be doing a concert at the Cathedral, in Wale Street, in the city centre of Cape Town, on Fri. 16 April, at 8pm.

I have secured, as the guest speaker for the night, Anglican Archbishop THABO MOKGOBA, who will update us on the situation in Haiti. He recently visited the affected areas and has been involved in aid efforts through the Anglican Church. They have an existing fund for Haiti, and it is through this channel that the funds raised on the night will be sent.

THE LINE-UP:
POETS: Diana Ferrus and Chris Ferndale, as well as three junior poets (TBA)

MUSICIANS: The Keith Tabisher Ensemble
Janice De Lilly (singer-guitarist)
Wilmie Monk (singer-songwriter, pianist)
Megan Francis (singer)
Bienvenue Mambote (singer-guitarist)
Martin and Jean (vocal-guitar pop duo)
and Wayne Bosch and I (vocal-guitar jazz duo)

Tickets cost R50, and are available from me. Please call 083 491 3048 or e-mail me at rushintrudy@yahoo.com. You may also contact me via Facebook, under "Trudy Rushin".

Peace

Melanie Scholtz - ‘LIVING STANDARDS’ album launch

Recorded in Norway, Sweden and South Africa, Melanie Scholtz's third album, "Living Standards" will be launched at the Alliance Française, 155, Loop Street, Cape Town on Thursday 8 April 2010 at 8:30pm. This is Melanie's first traditional jazz album and a celebration of her recent 2010 Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Jazz.

Playing repertoire from the new album, Melanie will be joined at the event by previous Standard Bank Award recipients, Mark Fransman (piano), Kesivan Naidoo (drums), two of Sweden's top jazz musicians from her Swedish band, Johan Hörlen (alto saxophone), Martin Sjöstedt (double bass) and a very special guest from Australia Adrian Mears (trombone).

"Living Standards offer the listener a new take on well known American Jazz standards", says Melanie. "It highlights some new South African standards by Carlo Mombelli and Buddy Wells and has allowed me to explore the world of song interpretation and lyric writing.

The album has been a two year labour of love with recording sessions in Sweden during August 2008, Norway August 2009 and South Africa, October 2009. The final sessions were recorded and mixed by Jurgen von Wechmar at Sunset studios in Stellenbosch in late October 2009. This album is a true collaboration and the cultural connections and difference in timbres and textures are clearly heard in this neatly packaged volume of music".

Melanie Scholtz continues to captivate listeners with her original and unique sound and the launch of her new album promises an evening of superb music. Tickets cost R50 and may be booked through Anne Marie at Alliance Française 021 423 5699 or at the door.

Four Cape Town Cyclists Take On The Cape Epic for Charity

Four Capetonians will be braving what has become one of the biggest cycling events in South Africa. The Cape Epic, the Magical and Untamed African mountain bike race, has put the country on the international cycling map with a bang and is, in fact, one of the biggest mountain bike races in the World. The cyclists are hoping to raise the public's awareness about, and funds for, the work being done by the Amy Biehl Foundation Trust with township children.

Mike Powell(General Manager of Reeds Tygervalley) and Donald Christy(Operations Director Of Reeds Motor Group) are riding the Cape Epic Mountain Bike Race from 21 to 28 March together with partners, Alex Kruger(well know IT Specialist) and anaesthetist, Ian Seggie, respectively. For any cyclist, the Epic is a serious adventure and challenge. For the average cyclist it is an almost insurmountable challenge. It includes 16000m of climbing and traversing 900-kilometers of dirt roads and other difficult terrain.

For the men, going into the race for the first time will be an experience in itself and will truly be a voyage into the unknown. All monies raised will go directly to the Amy Biehl Foundation Trust as the riders are paying their own costs – between R30 000 and R50 000 per rider. They hope to raise R100 000 towards this very worthy cause.

Donations can be deposited into the Amy Biehl Foundation Trust account at First National Bank , Adderley Street branch. Account Number : 6208 5677 890.

The Foundation is named after Amy Biehl, an American Fullbright Scholar who was the victim of political mob violence in Gugulethu outside of Cape Town in 1993. More than 1 000 children benefit from its development programmes.

"Jazz and freedom go hand in hand. That explains it. There isn't any more to add to it. If I do add to it, it gets complicated. That's something for you to think about. You think about it and dig it. You dig it..." Thelonious Monk
