"The Ethan Smith Trio", featuring Ethan Smith (saxophones and flutes), Brydon Bolton (double-bass) and Claude Cozens (drums), make their concert debut on Saturday 2 June, 8pm at "Erin Hall" - 8 Erin Road, Rondebosch
A group with an eclectic mix of sound influences, the trio's music is strongly rooted in traditional musical styles from Africa, South Africa, the Middle and Far East. They bring this together within a jazz and improvised context.
"My aim with the trio is to establish freer forms and a greater emphasis on improvisation - which is to say that the trio is not as 'tune driven' as my quartet is. Brydon and Claude are highly intuitive musicians, so the freer, more pliable forms allow for each musician’s strengths and musical preferences to come to the fore." says Smith.
Smith, winner of the 2009 FMR / Pick 'n Pay Music Award in the Jazz category made a very favourable impression when he went on tour with the Kyle Shepherd 'fineART' Quartet in June 2010 to perform in Switzerland at The Bird's Eye Jazz Club and Denmark at the Aarhus and Riverboat Jazz Festivals. He is also (most notably) a member of The Kyle Shepherd Group.
TICKETS (to be paid at the door) cost R80. Students pay R50 (on presentation of student card).
