WANTED RESTLESS NATIVES

Independent Armchair Theatre,
135 Lower Main Road,
Observatory Doors Open at 9pm
Cover Charge is R30

Hot, young, Mother City Jazz Quintet known as The RESTLESS NATIVES, complete with new saxophonist Chris Engel, make a very welcome return to the Armchair Headset on Thursday 21st February.

Chris Engel is an exciting new member to the group. He began playing saxophone at the age of 10 and since then has performed at the Cape Town International Jazz festival with world renowned American jazz artists Joe McBride, Gerald Veasley and Kenny Blake. In 2006 Engel studied at Norway's prestigious institution, The Norwegian Academy of Music. While in education Engel was involved with a successful South African youth jazz development project called The Little Giants. During his time in the band he performed alongside great jazz artists such as Bheki Mseleku and Mervin Africa. The bands major achievement was performing for President Mbeki and Minister of Education Kader Asmal.

Other members of the NATIVES also have impressive feats within the jazz world.

Kesivan Naidoo needs little introduction to music lovers and is one of the most sought after drummers in anyone's books.

Jason Reolon on piano (Breakfast Included) was winner of the SAMRO National Overseas Scholarship for best Jazz Pianist in 2001, taking up his scholarship in New York in 2004

Shane Cooper on bass is a regular at Headset and also plays with great bands such as Babu and Closet Snare.

Lee Thomson on trumpet is a well-known Cape Town based musician who has worked with Springbok Nude Girls, Hog Hoggidy Hog and Freshly Ground. Making serious waves in the Cape Town jazz scene the Restless Natives are one of the most popular jazz ensembles in the city.

On Tuesdays they perform at Asoka in Kloof Street where their residencies pack out the venue each week.

As WhatsOnSa reported,
'Each of these musicians could quite easily take up the entire stage alone and have the audience eating out of their hands'.

Combining these diverse and talented jazz musicians enables the Restless Natives to outshine wherever they perform.

The Band:
Chris Engel Saxophones
Kesivan Naidoo Drums
Jason Reolon Piano
Shane Cooper Double Bass
Lee Thomson Trumpet/Flugel Horn
