Brothers With Voices

After the huge success of our last music concert, sold out to overflowing, The Kronendal Music Academy of Hout Bay is pleased to announce our next performance on the 30th of August 2007.
Brothers with Voices was started by Mswandile Mtjobile in 2001, in Imizamu Yethu, Hout Bay.

Mswadile has always had a passion for singing, since he started grade 2 at his primary school in Tarkastad, in the Eastern Cape. By 2004 he had a 10-man strong choir and they have performed since for Township Tours, funeral, weddings and general public concerts in Imizamu Yethu. They are well-known in the Hout Bay community and are often called upon to perform at school concert (such as the Diverse Cultures Concert held at Kronendal Primary School in term one of this year). Two of the choir members have had to leave the choir this year but the remaining 8 voices are powerful enough to compensate for the loss at present.

In April 2007 Mswandile approached the Music Academy for vocal training for the choir as well as tuition for the choir members in possibly one or two instruments. He felt certain that this would enhance their performance capabilities and also improve their talents.

We so appreciated this show of initiative that we immediately sought a way to help this acapalla group. As a fledgling NPO we don't have the funds to put these gentlemen through formal training and decided to offer them a benefit concert to be held in August to see to that end.

We believe at the Academy to provide only the highest standard for our pupils and have gratefully secured the services of several professional musicians to provide backing instrumental accompaniment for the group. Further to this we have a children's choir consisting of children from the different communities of Hout Bay who will perform on some of the songs with Brothers. We have also provided the services of highly respected vocal trainer from UCT, Ms Anthea Haupt, to teach the acapella group vocal skills and strength training until the concert.

Please note that the Academy will take no cut from this concert, our costs for the concert will be covered by sponsorship and ticket sales.

We believe that by taking the initiative of approaching the Academy to empower themselves, Brothers with Voices deserves an opportunity to realise their dream. We appeal to you to support this wonderful cause, so spread the word and tell ALL your friends and family!!

WHEN: Thursday 30th August 2007
WHERE: Kronendal Primary School, Andrews Rd, Hout Bay
HOW MUCH: R50 for adults and R25 for students and pensioners

For more info, please contact the Academy on 082 331 4062 or

Many musical thanks!

Cape Town Jazz Radio

There are some radio presenters who make out some jazz artists appear to be only "one hit wonders". They know only one or a few songs of a jazz artist and only these songs that they know get played repeatedly.(Maybe they get told what to play).

Trumpeter Don Cherry said "When people believe in boundaries, they become part of them."

I do believe that there are some creative presenters and that they do have a choice to play what they want to play. It is that simple

"Anyone can make the simple complicated. Creativity is making the complicated simple"
Charles Mingus

Luckily, there is some relief. Eric Alan has compiled a good summary of radio jazz shows that can be tuned into from Cape Town. Get it here.

If you know of any more, let Eric know.

Happy listening.

"Jazz and freedom go hand in hand. That explains it. There isn't any more to add to it. If I do add to it, it gets complicated. That's something for you to think about. You think about it and dig it. You dig it..." Thelonious Monk
