The Music of Chris McGregor - University of York Jazz Orchestra

I received this email from Jonathan Eato a few days ago:

"...I thought you'd like to see a flyer for a concert I'm doing with students in York of Chris McGregor's music. We're really lucky to have Julian Argüelles and Chris Batchelor playing with us as they both knew and worked with Chris McGregor in the Brotherhood.

Stay well brother.

Jonathan."

The Music of Chris McGregor and the Brotherhood of Breath

For this first Jazz Orchestra concert of the year we are delighted to present music written by Chris McGregor for his seminal group The Brotherhood of Breath. This band famously combined exiled South Africans and Europeans and became hugely influential to a generation of younger musicians.

The guest artists for this performance - Julian Argüelles (saxophone) and Chris Batchelor (trumpet) - both played with McGregor in The Brotherhood of Breath.

Performance materials for this concert have been reconstructed from original parts, where they exist, and from various recordings.

"Jazz and freedom go hand in hand. That explains it. There isn't any more to add to it. If I do add to it, it gets complicated. That's something for you to think about. You think about it and dig it. You dig it..." Thelonious Monk
