"THE ETHAN SMITH TRIO" Live in Concert @ Erin Hall

"The Ethan Smith Trio", featuring Ethan Smith (saxophones and flutes), Brydon Bolton (double-bass) and Claude Cozens (drums), make their concert debut on Saturday 2 June, 8pm at "Erin Hall" - 8 Erin Road, Rondebosch

A group with an eclectic mix of sound influences, the trio's music is strongly rooted in traditional musical styles from Africa, South Africa, the Middle and Far East. They bring this together within a jazz and improvised context.

"My aim with the trio is to establish freer forms and a greater emphasis on improvisation - which is to say that the trio is not as 'tune driven' as my quartet is. Brydon and Claude are highly intuitive musicians, so the freer, more pliable forms allow for each musician’s strengths and musical preferences to come to the fore." says Smith.

Smith, winner of the 2009 FMR / Pick 'n Pay Music Award in the Jazz category made a very favourable impression when he went on tour with the Kyle Shepherd 'fineART' Quartet in June 2010 to perform in Switzerland at The Bird's Eye Jazz Club and Denmark at the  Aarhus and Riverboat Jazz Festivals. He is also (most notably) a member of The Kyle Shepherd Group.

TICKETS (to be paid at the door) cost R80. Students pay R50 (on presentation of student card).

KMA Jazz Band performs with Top Cape Town Musicians

The Kronendal Music Academy of Hout Bay is a Non Profit Music Academy dedicated to providing music education of all styles and instruments to the underprivileged communities in the Hout Bay valley. Founded in 2007 by Director and Hout Bay resident, Ms Dwyn Griesel, KMA now provides musical opportunities to over 130 pupils, priding itself on successful cultural and racial integration, which is KMA’s underlying principle.

Over the last 5½ years, the Academy has grown exponentially on an annual basis and is now establishing itself as a sustainable and reputable music school in the Hout Bay valley, providing a much needed service to not only the disadvantaged communities but also the many families in Hout Bay who can afford music tuition for their children.

KMA has won many awards, including the Mixed Choirs Trophy at the 2011 Cape Town Eistedfodd, and the Hout Bay Lions Club Louis Volks Humanitarian Award. In November 2011 Dwyn received the 2011 Inyathelo Philanthropy in the Arts Award.

Besides 11 other ensembles on the go, KMA has established a successful partnership with James House Children’s Home in Hout Bay, by developing a marimba group of 12 young girls from Imizamu Yethu informal settlement, who have performed in and around Cape Town on a regular basis since 2010.

Says Dwyn, "To date we would not have been able to survive without the support of organisations and individuals locally and internationally, but in order for KMA to continue expanding and continue being a valuable contributor to South African society we constantly need increased sponsorship. We depend on the assistance and involvement of the community and welcome any contributions people out there are willing to make."

On the 13th of June 2012, the Academy’s "flagship", the KMA Jazz Band, will be leaving for Germany on their first ever tour – anywhere, let alone overseas! Organised by the Goethe Institute, "Aktion Welt" and "The Exlie Centre" in Germany, the band will be performing at 2 major German festivals including the Stelzen fest where they will share the stage with Abdullah Ibrahim.

The KMA Jazz Band is: Aviwe Mkhaphuza on Alto Sax, Hadrien Ramondi on Trumpet, Cameron Claasen on Drums, Chad Van Rooyen on Piano and vocals, Leanne Johannes on Vocals, Lungisa Chili on Bass and Louise Zschage on Trombone (Band leader).

With enormous costs involved, KMA wishes to thank the generous support of their patron, Prof Denis Goldberg, and all those who have contributed to helping the Jazz band fulfil its needs for the trip, especially Michelline Daniel at ProAdd and Nigel Lardner-Burke at Fabric House, and the Hout Bay and Pinelands Rotaries.

On Saturday the 2nd of June 2012, the KMA Jazz Band will be holding their final fund raiser concert before the tour to Germany, where they will perform with some of Cape Town’s finest musicians: Derek Gripper, Tony Cox, Michele Maxwell, David Ledbetter, Buddy Wells, James Kibby, Chantal Willie and Andre Petersen.

The concert is at Riverside Estates, Valley Road, Hout Bay (opposite the World of Birds), at 6pm. The tickets are R120 and this includes wine and snacks.

ARTSCAPE YOUTH JAZZ FESTIVAL 2012 - SATURDAY 2 JUNE

This year, Artscape’s Youth Jazz Festival 2012 celebrates its 10th year with seven soloists who auditioned to perform for this momentous occasion. Directed and conducted by the legendary jazz trumpeter, educator and performing artist Ian Smith, Kevin Gibson(Drums), Andrew Ford (Piano) and Wesley Rustin (Double Bass) form a jazz ensemble to accompany the soloists.  The festival is on Saturday 2 June in the Artscape Theatre from 19h30 until 22h00.

All the soloists come from the Western Cape and include: Adele Wyngaard(24)  Vocalist from Kraaifontein, Angelo Panizza (21) on Piano from Landsdowne, Brendon Hendricks (22) Bass Guitar from Delft, Lindelo Mangesi (20) Tenor Sax from Gugulethu, Marcé Underwood (23)Vocalist, Little Mowbray, Mark Williams (23)on Guitar and Whitney Olivier (17)Vocalist  are both from Mitchells Plain.

Already making waves in the jazz arena, some of these musicians have represented South Africa at local and international jazz festivals and events such as the prestigious Big Band Festival, the National Jazz Festival in Grahamstown and the Cape Town International Jazz Festival. They have also appeared on television and had interviews on radio.

Since its inception, the educational programme has changed each year to create exciting challenges for participants, developing possibilities, creativity and diversity. Last year the Delft Big Band conducted by Ian Smith accompanied six soloists.  The band and soloists were also mentored by Ian.  In previous years, youth bands received individual mentorship, with well-known jazz musicians in preparation for their performance at the festivals. Kevin Gibson and Wesley Rustin were amongst those mentors.  Artscape provides the platform to showcase the work with all the technical support.

In 2003 Artscape Audience Development and Education included the Youth Jazz Festival as an extension of their annual Classical Youth Music Festival, which began in 1971 - to give young instrumental soloists and singers the opportunity of performing with a professional orchestra.  The 2012 Youth Jazz Festival once again follows the same concept with soloists performing with highly skilled professional musicians who will also mentor the soloists.

This concert marks a decade of Artscape’s youth jazz development and education and is a project of the Audience Development and Education Department.  Says Marlene le Roux, director of the department: ‘Not only does the Jazz project develop musical skills, it gives assurance to future audiences for this genre. There is a phenomenal jazz tradition in the Western  Cape which will be kept alive through nurturing these young musicians. This project is building positive future citizens who recognise through hard work they can put their dreams into action.’

Artscape salutes Ian Smith and all the mentors who have over the past 10 years contributed to the Jazz industry and paved the way for young musicians to find a career in music. Artscape also congratulates this year’s soloists and welcomes the musicians and the public to celebrate the 2012 Festival.

Tickets for the festival cost R80. Book through Artscape Dial-a-Seat 021 421 7695,Computicket, Shoprite and Checkers outlets and or line www.computickets.com - Seating is unreserved and is sold out every year - book now.

This project is generously supported by Distell and BusTransport by HCI.

The Trio features Shepherd on grand piano, Shane Cooper on double bass and Jonno Sweetman on drums.

"…Shepherd, together with Shane Cooper on double bass and drummer Jonno Sweetman, creating music of subtle yet tremendous power. Though the technique of all three is undeniable, this is no antiseptic chopsfest: it is music of genuine passion, meditative and stately but always emotionally engaged. It has groove at its very core, with hummable, stripped back melodies on top – and not just in the 'head' sections that traditionally top and tail jazz arrangements." Marcus O'Dair | The Arts Desk, United Kingdom

Shepherd recently launched his 3rd Album, 'South African History !X' to critical acclaim. His two previous Albums, 'fineART' and 'A Portrait of Home', attracted South African Music Award nominations and drew recognition worldwide from respected jazz critics and discerning music listeners alike.

Shepherd has performed in Japan, Holland, France, Belgium, The Bird's Eye Jazz Club (Switzerland), the Ã…rhus Jazz Festival (Denmark) as well as at home in South Africa at The Cape Town International Jazz and Joy of Jazz Festivals.

The Kyle Shepherd Trio is set to perform China and Switzerland later this year.
