Bra Winston is an icon of South Africa/Cape Town jazz. He first came to prominence in the 60’s with the release of his highly acclaimed L.P. “Yakali’nkomo”. This brought him to the attention of Duke Ellington, who had invited him to join his big band. In the 80’s, 90’s he released further CD’s namely “Jika”, “Molo Africa” and performed throughout South Africa and abroad, receiving accolades from both musicians and the audience.

Mankunku had many opportunities live abroad, receiving many invitations from persons such as Ellington and Chick Corea, but remain at home and help nurture younger musicians, likes of Faya Faku, Andre’ Petersen, Graham Beyer and more.

For the past year, Bra Winston has been incapacitated due to ailments with a heart condition and arthritis. He has had a portion of his middle finger amputated which left him unable to use his hand, thus leaving him unable to perform. Further lung and kidney complication arose. Our main Indaba is for him to repair.

Don’t miss.
