KYLE SHEPHERD 'South African History !X' album launch 5 April 2012

Highly acclaimed South African Jazz pianist and composer, Kyle Shepherd launches his new Album, ‘South African History !X’ on Thursday, 5 April 2012, 8:30pm at The Baxter Theatre (Concert Hall), Rondebosch, Cape Town.

The concert line-up is formidable, with Shepherd (piano), Buddy Wells (sax), Shane Cooper (double bass) and Jonno Sweetman (drums), who all feature on the new album, as well as Darren English (trumpet/flugel horn) and Ethan Smith (alto sax).

The New Album

In essence, Shepherd’s latest release represents a profoundly fitting soundtrack to the history of his home country, South Africa. "X in mathematics represents the unknown. For my generation of young South Africans, large parts of our history still remain unknown. Many of us are, however, committed to knowing ourselves through knowing our country and the truth around its history. Like all my work, this still remains a sincerely musical statement, with the music also offering a path to self-discovery." Kyle Shepherd

Throughout the 13-track album, tracks such as “Sound Portrait of a Modern African Man”, “Xan Do Do – with piano improvisation” (featuring a sample of the Bushmen of the Kalahari) and the 3-part “Cape Genesis Suite” comprising the pieces: “Xam Premonitions”, “Slave Labour” (featuring the legendary Zim Ngqawana R.I.P) and “Cape Flats Lament”, poignantly and succinctly trace important landmarks in his country’s history, from its ancient beginnings, through periods of colonial and apartheid oppression into the modern era of liberation and globalisation.

While naturally drawing on the rich tapestry of traditional South African music and Jazz, Shepherd’s musical works also point towards the evolvement of his own authentic voice, which, as renowned South African Jazz guru Gwen Ansell aptly put it, “live in the jazz world but are never imprisoned by it“.

The new album will be available for sale on the night of the launch concert or from all good music stores from the beginning of April 2012.

FURTHER BACKGROUND

Both of Shepherd’s previous Albums ‘fineART’ and ‘A Portrait of Home’ attracted South African Music Award nominations and drew recognition worldwide from respected jazz critics and discerning music listeners alike.

Shepherd’s stature as a performer at home and abroad has grown tremendously over the past few years which have led to celebrated performances in Japan, Holland, France, Belgium, The Bird’s Eye Jazz Club (Switzerland), the Ã…rhus Jazz Festival (Denmark) as well as The Cape Town International Jazz and Joy of Jazz Festivals in South Africa.

MORE INFO ON KYLE SHEPHERD...
Shepherd, who has just returned from a very successful Dutch Tour with the highly acclaimed ‘hiphopera’, AFRIKAAPS, leaves South African shores again at the end of November 2011 for a series of Trio performances in Japan!

Shepherd, who is widely recognized as being one of South Africa’s most influential artists and composers is set to announce the release of his third album shortly. This follows the release of two critically acclaimed Albums namely, 'fineART' (2009) and 'LIVE' Trio Album 'A Portrait of Home' (2010) both of which earned him SAMA (South African Music Award) nominations; 'fineART' for 'Best Traditional Jazz Album' and 'Best Newcomer' and in April 2011, 'A Portrait of Home' for 'Best Traditional Jazz Album'.

In his review of the Trio album, international music critic, Marcus O'Dair | The Arts Desk UK, commends the work of the Trio. "A Portrait Of Home sees Shepherd, together with Shane Cooper on double bass and drummer Jonno Sweetman, creating music of subtle yet tremendous power. Though the technique of all three is undeniable, this is no antiseptic chopsfest: it is music of genuine passion, meditative and stately but always emotionally engaged. It has groove at its very core, with hummable, stripped back melodies on top – and not just in the 'head' sections that traditionally top and tail jazz arrangements."

Shepherd's ensembles have performed nationally and internationally. Notable performance credits include The Bird's Eye Jazz Club (Switzerland) in 2010, the 2010 Ã…rhus Jazz Festival (Denmark), the 2010 Riverboat Jazz Festival (Denmark), the 2010 Joy of Jazz Festival, the 2010 Pan African Space Station and the 2009 Cape Town International Jazz Festival.

The Quartet will perform Smith's original compositions. Influenced by Jazz, South African, Middle and Far Eastern traditional styles, the Quartet generates an energy that initiates organic explorations, moving Smith’s compositions into fresh and inventive territories. “We are beginning to establish a great togetherness, a synergy. Because of the creative impetus of each member in the band, there is this sense of constant shape shifting, this constant ebb and flow between form and formlessness within the music – which makes for exciting listening." says Smith.

Smith, winner of the 2009 FMR / Pick 'n Pay Music Award in the Jazz category made a very favourable impression when he went on tour with the Kyle Shepherd 'fineART' Quartet in June 2010 to perform in Switzerland at The Bird's Eye Jazz Club and Denmark at the Aarhus and Riverboat Jazz Festivals.

Shepherd’s Debut Album 'fineART' which was released in January 2009 has been highly acclaimed by respected Jazz critics and discerning listeners alike.

"(his compositions) unashamedly display his cultural music traditions, drawing on the unique rhythms, harmonies, and melodic devices of what Kyle calls “music from home”. Carol Martin (SAJE - South African Association for Jazz Education).

Miles Keylock (Mail & Guardian)

“Shepherd’s jagged edges and questioning dissonances sound far more like Ibrahim at the start of his career than his magisterial solemnity. The young player’s plaintive little minor-key segues into fragments of musical fragments represent a sonic collage of his city, much as pianist Robert Glasper’s sounds (also heard this year in Cape Town) collage the jazz history and hip-hop present of New York. ” Gwen Ansell (Business Day / The Weekender)

Kyle Shepherd releases Debut Album!

Here in Cape Town we have "Eerste Nuwe Jaar", "Tweede Nuwe Jaar" and now get ready for "Derde Nuwe Jaar"

Kyle Shepherd, one of South Africa’s foremost young jazz pianists, will release his much anticipated Debut Album entitled "fineART" at a concert to be held at 7:30pm on Saturday, 03 January 2009, at the SABC Auditorium, Beach road, Sea Point, Cape Town.

"fineART" which features Shepherd on piano, alto sax, vocals & percussion, Buddy Wells (tenor sax), Claude Cozens (drums) and Dylan Tabisher (double bass), consists of 11 tracks, all of which are Shepherd’s compositions with the exception of a Cape Traditional song, “Die maan skyn so helder”.

Explaining the title of the Album, Shepherd says: “My concept is summed up in this poem
of mine:
fineART is the soil in which the seed of creativity manifests itself
this is music from home
why wouldn't it be?
why shouldn't it be?"

Shepherd goes on to say: “My music is a direct representation of my traditions and the lineage of artists that came before me, and I am merely a portrait of their mastery.”

In his Foreword to the Album, internationally acclaimed South African music legend, Zim Ngqawana had the following to say about Shepherd's music:
"Authenticity is another word for originality and this is clearly evident in Kyle’s compositions, arrangements and improvisation. He has managed to find a balance between the intellect and intuition. Kyle is a meditator and a poet."

Whilst only 21 of age, Shepherd’s achievements already include performances with the likes of Errol Dyers, Robbie Jansen, Louis Moholo, Mccoy Mrubata and Zim Ngqawana.

In 2005, Shepherd won the FMR/Pick ‘n Pay Travel Award. As part of the 2008 Cape Town International Jazz Festival Programme, Shepherd’s Quartet performed his original compositions in a virtual “Jazz Conversation” with students from the Juilliard Institute for Jazz Studies in New York.

While the Album does reflect a more modern approach to improvised music, Shepherd’s compositions remain unashamedly rooted in his cultural music traditions by drawing on the unique rhythms, harmonies & melodic devices that are so unique to home, Cape Town, South Africa.

The Album Launch Concert features Shepherd’s fineART Quartet with Buddy Wells (sax), Shane Cooper (double bass) and Claude Cozens (drums).
