For his Debut Album ‘fineART’, Shepherd earned two South African Music Award 2010 nominations for ‘Best Traditional Jazz Album’ and ‘Best Newcomer’. Watch out for news of his next Album release, a Live Trio Album entitled ‘A Portrait of Home’ which will be out shortly.

The Trio will perform Shepherd’s original compositions.

Shepherd draws his musical influences from the traditional rhythms, melodies and harmonies of Cape Town, South Africa as well as Jazz music and ethnic traditional music of the world. Abdullah Ibrahim, Zim Ngqawana, Robbie Jansen, Keith Jarrett and Jason Moran all count amongst those who have inspired Shepherd musically, spiritually and creatively.

“My music is a direct representation of my traditions and the lineage of artists that came before me, and I am merely a portrait of their mastery.” Kyle Shepherd

"Jazz and freedom go hand in hand. That explains it. There isn't any more to add to it. If I do add to it, it gets complicated. That's something for you to think about. You think about it and dig it. You dig it..." Thelonious Monk
