MORE INFO ON KYLE SHEPHERD...
Shepherd, who has just returned from a very successful Dutch Tour with the highly acclaimed ‘hiphopera’, AFRIKAAPS, leaves South African shores again at the end of November 2011 for a series of Trio performances in Japan!

Shepherd, who is widely recognized as being one of South Africa’s most influential artists and composers is set to announce the release of his third album shortly. This follows the release of two critically acclaimed Albums namely, 'fineART' (2009) and 'LIVE' Trio Album 'A Portrait of Home' (2010) both of which earned him SAMA (South African Music Award) nominations; 'fineART' for 'Best Traditional Jazz Album' and 'Best Newcomer' and in April 2011, 'A Portrait of Home' for 'Best Traditional Jazz Album'.

In his review of the Trio album, international music critic, Marcus O'Dair | The Arts Desk UK, commends the work of the Trio. "A Portrait Of Home sees Shepherd, together with Shane Cooper on double bass and drummer Jonno Sweetman, creating music of subtle yet tremendous power. Though the technique of all three is undeniable, this is no antiseptic chopsfest: it is music of genuine passion, meditative and stately but always emotionally engaged. It has groove at its very core, with hummable, stripped back melodies on top – and not just in the 'head' sections that traditionally top and tail jazz arrangements."

Shepherd's ensembles have performed nationally and internationally. Notable performance credits include The Bird's Eye Jazz Club (Switzerland) in 2010, the 2010 Ã…rhus Jazz Festival (Denmark), the 2010 Riverboat Jazz Festival (Denmark), the 2010 Joy of Jazz Festival, the 2010 Pan African Space Station and the 2009 Cape Town International Jazz Festival.

A PORTRAIT OF HOME - Kyle Shepherd New Album Launch Concert

Renowned South African Jazz pianist, Kyle Shepherd launches his 2nd Album, "A Portrait of Home" at 8pm, Saturday, 14 August 2010 at the UCT College of Music, Rondebosch.

"A Portrait of Home", a 10-track CD, features 9 original compositions of which 7 are brand new, and is a live recording of Shepherd’s Trio in concert at Stellenbosch University’s Music Conservatory in August 2009. The CD features Shepherd on piano, Shane Cooper on double bass and Jonno Sweetman on drums; all of whom will be performing at the launch concert.

"In 'A Portrait of Home' we are painting a picture of ourselves, in our lives, thoughts and emotions. With this offering we are also acknowledging the home of our spirit, the home of our people, our musical masters, the legacy of our country's past, our present and the promise of our future," says Shepherd.

Shepherd launched his debut album, 'fineART' to critical acclaim in January 2009 and earned him two 2010 South African Music Award (SAMA) nominations, for Best Traditional Jazz Album and Best Newcomer!

The launch of his new album comes fresh on the heels of Shepherd's fineART Quartet’s recent tour of Europe where they enthralled audiences at concert performances in Switzerland at The Bird's Eye Jazz Club & in Denmark at the Ã…rhus & Riverboat Jazz Festivals.

The new CD has already received airplay on SAFM, Fine Music Radio, Radio 2000 & UCT Radio and has been met with very favourable responses.

"A Portrait of Home" will be on sale at the launch concert and is also available from most leading CD stores in South Africa such as Look & Listen, Musica Mega Stores, Jive City, Just CD & The African Music Store.

Kyle Shepherd releases Debut Album!

Here in Cape Town we have "Eerste Nuwe Jaar", "Tweede Nuwe Jaar" and now get ready for "Derde Nuwe Jaar"

Kyle Shepherd, one of South Africa’s foremost young jazz pianists, will release his much anticipated Debut Album entitled "fineART" at a concert to be held at 7:30pm on Saturday, 03 January 2009, at the SABC Auditorium, Beach road, Sea Point, Cape Town.

"fineART" which features Shepherd on piano, alto sax, vocals & percussion, Buddy Wells (tenor sax), Claude Cozens (drums) and Dylan Tabisher (double bass), consists of 11 tracks, all of which are Shepherd’s compositions with the exception of a Cape Traditional song, “Die maan skyn so helder”.

Explaining the title of the Album, Shepherd says: “My concept is summed up in this poem
of mine:
fineART is the soil in which the seed of creativity manifests itself
this is music from home
why wouldn't it be?
why shouldn't it be?"

Shepherd goes on to say: “My music is a direct representation of my traditions and the lineage of artists that came before me, and I am merely a portrait of their mastery.”

In his Foreword to the Album, internationally acclaimed South African music legend, Zim Ngqawana had the following to say about Shepherd's music:
"Authenticity is another word for originality and this is clearly evident in Kyle’s compositions, arrangements and improvisation. He has managed to find a balance between the intellect and intuition. Kyle is a meditator and a poet."

Whilst only 21 of age, Shepherd’s achievements already include performances with the likes of Errol Dyers, Robbie Jansen, Louis Moholo, Mccoy Mrubata and Zim Ngqawana.

In 2005, Shepherd won the FMR/Pick ‘n Pay Travel Award. As part of the 2008 Cape Town International Jazz Festival Programme, Shepherd’s Quartet performed his original compositions in a virtual “Jazz Conversation” with students from the Juilliard Institute for Jazz Studies in New York.

While the Album does reflect a more modern approach to improvised music, Shepherd’s compositions remain unashamedly rooted in his cultural music traditions by drawing on the unique rhythms, harmonies & melodic devices that are so unique to home, Cape Town, South Africa.

The Album Launch Concert features Shepherd’s fineART Quartet with Buddy Wells (sax), Shane Cooper (double bass) and Claude Cozens (drums).

Expect to hear original compositions in a free form setting that aim to take the audience on a sonic journey through the imaginary worlds of the Restless Natives

This will take place over two nights and will be a completely live recording - what you hear on the night is what you get on the album. Each night will yield a different musical experience so come to one or both

Tickets will also be available at the door on both nights if you'd rather chance it - there is no guarantee of seats though as tickets are going quickly! The Restless Natives have made serious waves in the local music scene, challenging and expanding the ears of people who would not normally be exposed to Jazz, as well as those of loyal audio adventurers that seek out anything to stimulate their brains as a statement against the mainstream

They also performed at Rocking the Daisies in 2007 and regularly at the Armchair Theatre Headset sessions, The Waiting Room and The Assembly

Their infamous Tuesday night residency at Asoka has now been running for 2 years (surely one of the longest Mother City live band residencies) The Natives will be celebrating together with Asoka sometime in August with a special performance

babu - up roots - the album launch

Babu is having their album launch at the SABC Auditorium on Friday, 23rd May 2008.

Are you going to ask the question "Who is Babu?" If you are a jazz lover, for sure, you must have seen some of these guys playing at venues around town.

The group consist of:
Kesivan Naidoo - Drums and Cymbals
Reza Khota - Guitar
Ronan Skillen - Tabla and extended percussion
Shane Cooper - Bass

The binding force that brings this band of four highly imaginative and proficient musicians together is respect. Respecting the music and sharing a love for some of the most invigorating improvisational sounds in Jazz over the last 60 years. Drawing inspiration from the searching spirit in Jazz, and its ability to tap into the more complex realms of human experience, the subconscious, perhaps mystical world. This desire to look into the depth of shared musical experience leads us to investigate the improvisational practices of Indian Classical music, which has had an extensive history with spirituality in music.

With great faith, love and a willing audience, the performance occasion can bring our minds together to test the depth of ecstasy in music and leave the room charged with exhilaration, respect and love for all life.

In 2006 Engel studied at Norway's prestigious institution, The Norwegian Academy of Music. While in education Engel was involved with a successful South African youth jazz development project called The Little Giants. During his time in the band he performed alongside great jazz artists such as Bheki Mseleku and Mervin Africa. The bands major achievement was performing for President Mbeki and Minister of Education Kader Asmal.

Other members of the NATIVES also have impressive feats within the jazz world.
