Ethan Smith Quartet Farewell Jazz Concert

The Ethan Smith Quartet featuring some of Cape Town’s most promising young musicians namely Ethan Smith (alto sax), Kyle Shepherd (grand piano), Dylan Tabisher (double bass) & Warren Adams (drums) appear live in concert at 19h30 on Saturday, 8 August 2009 at UCT’s College of Music [C7], Rondebosch.

Join us in what promises to be a spectacular ‘Farewell Jazz Concert’ to bid Ethan bon voyage on the eve of his departure to Norway where he will continue his Jazz Studies at the Norwegian Academy of Music until June 2010. Smith is one of only two (2) young jazz musicians (the other being Wathiq Hoosain) who was selected to participate in a Music Exchange Programme between the Norwegian Academy of Music and the South African College of Music (UCT).

Zim Ngqawana, Robbie Jansen, Abdullah Ibrahim, Buddy Wells all count amongst the South African Master musicians who have inspired Smith. He also shows a keen interest in the music of the M-BASE school and its pioneers - Greg Osby, Steve Coleman, Jason Moran and Cassandra Wilson.

“My main influences are drawn from the rich Cape Town, South African and African musical styles and traditions; as well as Jazz and improvised music.” says Smith.

This talented saxophonist and composer is the winner of the 2009 Pick ‘n Pay / Fine Music Radio Award. Smith is also a member of The Kyle Shepherd Group.
